Volleyball School Volleyball Singapore

SNGS began with an enrolment of 40 students in two classes during its early days in 1933; and today, the school has expanded to a full school with approximately 3,000 students enrolled across the primary and secondary classes. However, the Singapore Chinese Girls’ School has assured parents that no student will be deprived of education because of financial constraints. Please visit the school website for further information as regards fees and enrolment.

  • The inclusion of Boon Lay and Westwood will also help to expand the base of female footballers in Singapore, he added.
  • HCI was founded in 2005, with a mission to provide both secondary and pre-university education.
  • It inspires the students to pursue their own passion by empowering them with choices in their own learning.
  • Like the mui tsai, they had been entrusted by their parents in China to the care of distant relatives in Singapore, the so-called “third or sixth paternal aunt” – sum gu orluk gu – some of whom worked in or even owned entertainment establishments themselves.
  • Blackmore Academy offers a platform for students to engage in workshopsthat extend learning beyond the classroom.

The women who chose to step into Singapore’s budding cabaret scene could now take control over their lives. Dancing in a cabaret paid relatively well, and was filled with music, alcohol and laughter. They could doll up and use their feminine wiles to manipulate men, unlike the subservient mui tsai, pipa tsai or brothel worker who had to endure servitude, slavery and indignity. Even the wealthy who patronised the more expensive brothels on Smith Street under the misconception that the women there were more discriminating, and thus safer, were not exempt. These men then – either knowingly or unknowingly – passed on sexually transmitted diseases to their wives and concubines. Beyond the immediate satiation of their sexual urges, many of the thousands of men who sought comfort in the arms of prostitutes did not see marriage in their future.

Both reports called for more mentors and female role models to tackle this issue. Girls reported less confidence than boys in their ability to solve mathematics or science problems. There are significant barriers to girls’ participation in schooling in countries such as Afghanistan, whose government has banned girls from receiving an education beyond the age of 12. A 2023 United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) report estimated that 122 million girls were still out of school around the world. They are encouraged to delve deeper into issues and collaborate with other learners in the same way that professionals in the discipline would, for example investigating a problem or situation in the way a scientist or sociologist would see it. This sets the stage for students to discover and create new knowledge, and strive for the betterment of their country and the world.

At the same time, Mr Narasimman said there is a need for tiered support, rather than simply imparting more mental health knowledge to students. The NIE study could be useful in studying problematic behaviours among girls in high-achieving schools, but what comes after and the support given to this group of teens is more important, he added. Speaking to The Straits Times, Dr Tilley, from NIE’s Department of Psychology and Child and Human Development, said this is the first large-scale study that tracks teenage girls here over time. The curriculum cultivates students’ abilities to ask probing questions, take risks responsibly, learn from mistakes and failures, pursue inquiryand decision-making skills, enabling them to be active drivers of theirown learning journey. The curriculum emphasises developing principled and responsible citizenswho will serve as ethical and civic leaders in society, guided by a robustmoral compass, poised to serve and contribute to community, Singapore andthe world. A balanced approach where academically brilliant students are recognised and groomed, while the less academically inclined ones are supported and encouraged to pursue their interests based on their strengths, will be optimal.

An all new “Girls in Tech” category is also introduced in this year’s edition of the SG100WIT List, which showcased 18 female students from schools and institutions in Singapore who are pursuing their passion and interest in technology. The Singapore economy was growing steadily by the late 1970s, and the government begun to turn more towards social concerns, including an emphasis on women’s traditional roles as wives and mothers, and their responsibility for the family unit. The latter, coupled with the notion of the man as the head of the household, was considered the bedrock of “family values” that defined the social fabric of the nation. The Stop At Two campaign was a huge public education campaign that encouraged Singaporeans to stop at two children, regardless of whether they were sons or daughters. The campaign had a knock-on effect for girls’ access to education, as parents could better afford to educate their daughters. Other than relationship and family problems, a commonly cited issue that afflicts many of the students we see at the Institute of Mental Health is academic-based stress. A Nanyang Technological University study in 2022 and a PAP paper in 2021 noted the underrepresentation of women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (Stem) careers.
